You're picked up within about 5 km of Utsjoki village and kitted out with extra winter clothing and a helmet before setting off.
You travel by sled, towed behind your local guide's snowmobile, deep into the Paistunturi wilderness — one of the world's oldest mountain regions, its once-sharp peaks worn by 3 billion years of erosion into gentle rolling fells cut by river valleys and canyons.
Along the way, your guide points out the region's birds, wildlife and snow formations, and explains how the Sámi people still practise reindeer herding, hunting and fishing here, and why this wilderness is an important cultural landscape.
