Enjoy two of Lapland's best activities in summer : canoe & reindeer!
Canoeing is one of the best outdoor activities you may enjoy in summer / autumn in Lapland. The region is full of peaceful rivers and lakes, with beautiful colors and rich wildlife to observe. This is a great outdoor experience that allows you to connect with the beautiful arctic nature while enjoying some gentle exercise.
During this experience, you will enjoy paddling your own canoe on a quiet lake. You will learn the basics of canoeing, steering and other safety aspects. The first objective of the morning will be to reach the reindeer farm, located a few hundred meters just on the other shore of the lake - this easy and short trip allows you to get more confident with canoeing techniques.
Reindeer is probably the most iconic animal of Lapland, it has played a significant part in local traditional lifestyle. Meeting those lovely semi-wild animals is always a unique experience for anyone visiting Rovaniemi!
The local farm is also very authentic, as herders have been living in this area for four hundred years. This visit of the authentic reindeer farm is therefore a perfect opportunity to take a dip into local culture and traditional lifestyle. You will meet the herders with some of their male animals, and you will learn about reindeer husbandry. As it is the first visit of the day, you will also get the chance to feed the reindeers with some of their favorite food, lichen. This is a great chance to approach the animals too, as reindeer are still very wild.
After the visit, you will get back onboard your canoes, this time for a longer paddling trip. You will enjoy going on the pristine waters of the peaceful lake and enjoy the beautiful surrounding nature.
This unique canoe & reindeer adventure is adapted to all levels, and organized in very small groups for more comfort. It is led by a certified canoeing guide who will provide you with paddling instructions and other safety aspects. They will always be there to assist you if you need, and offer you as much of their stories and knowledge about herding reindeer. Hot drinks and cookies will be served at the farm too.
This canoe trip is around 3 hours and the visit at the farm lasts around 1 hour. This is a unique experience in Rovaniemi as this is the one and only canoeing trip that really takes you to an authentic reindeer farm (and is not a mere combination of two separate activities with no connection together), which makes this adventure much more interesting!
