The journey to the Amethyst Mine takes about 1.5 hours from Rovaniemi. In winter you travel by Pendolino (snow train) through the snowy forest to the hilltop; in summer you drive up directly by car.
On arrival, you step into a rustic wooden building to hear about the mine's history and the allure of amethysts.
Armed with your own digging tool, you head into the digging area to unearth your own amethyst gemstone.
You choose one stone to keep as a memento — one that fits within your closed hand.
Before leaving, you can browse the on-site shop, filled with amethyst jewelry and stones.
